2025 Featured speaker: Dr. Tonya M Matthews
Dr. Tonya M. Matthews is a leading expert in social entrepreneurship, equity and inclusion strategy, and education, combining her skills as a poet and engineer to foster innovative partnerships and community development. She serves as President and CEO of the International African American Museum (IAAM) in Charleston, SC, which is dedicated to impactful storytelling on African American history and confronting institutionalized racism.
Dr. Matthews promotes lifelong learning and empathy, evident through her previous roles as Associate Provost at Wayne State University and President & CEO of the Michigan Science Center. She is also the founder of The STEMinista Project, aimed at engaging girls and women in STEM. Her achievements have earned her honors such as Charleston’s Most Influential and a Trailblazer Award. She has served on the National Academy of Sciences Board on Science Education, holds an honorary doctorate from Central Michigan University, and is a published poet. Dr. Matthews holds a Ph.D. in biomedical engineering from Johns Hopkins University and a B.S.E. from Duke University, with a certificate in African/African American Studies. She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and The Links, Inc., and is committed to fostering community progress wherever she resides. |
